All you need to know about u-PVC double glazed windows

Welcome back to EuroTech Windows official blog post where this time around we will be taking an in depth look at the material u-PVC and the benefits it can provide to your home, as well as its benefits over competing window materials.

What is u-PVC?

One of the most commonly asked questions we get at EuroTech Windows is about u-PVC, more specifically; What is u-PVC?

U-PVC is a form of PVC that is rigid in structure that can be used for applications of all kinds, including the manufacture of environmentally and cost effective windows and doors, like those from EuroTech Windows!

The ‘u’ in u-PVC specifically stands for ‘un-plasticised’ due to the rigid nature of the product; this is the feature that separates u-PVC from normal PVC.

PVC is an abbreviation for poly vinyl chloride. PVC is one of the most widely used polymers in the world and is widely used in construction due to its efficacy in applications where traditional materials like wood, copper, or iron are less effective.

PVC is made supple and more flexible by the addition of plasticisers, hence the point of difference between PVC and u-PVC.

This first blog post is going to go in depth and give you, the reader, an insider look at what all those fancy acronyms and standards that we advertise actually mean to you. Welcome to EuroTech Windows inaugural blog post; we hope you learn something!

What is the NatHERS/WERS?

If you have been researching buying windows you may have come across the term NatHERS/WERS, a confusing acronym that becomes infinitely more understandable once you understand what it stands for.

NatHERS is Australia’s Nationwide House Energy Rating Software which enables designers the ability to test their products before final selection is made.

WERS is the Window Energy Rating Scheme which is managed by the Australian Window Association.
What is so important about the NatHERS/WERS Standard?

The importance of the NatHERS/WERS is great to any homeowner as the Federal Government has committed to improving the energy efficiency of homes through the implementation of this system.

Not only does that mean that NatHERS/WERS tested windows can save you money on your power bills, it also means that you will improve the resale value of your home, and the comfort of your inside environment.

In fact, if you are planning on building a new home, your home’s design will have to pass a NatHERS/WERS test to ensure that your home has a certain Star energy rating for the building fabric to be used in its construction. For instance in Victoria a 6 Star energy rating is required for all new homes and apartments.

How much can I save on my energy bills?

At the end of the day one of the biggest motivating factors for people wanting to install double glazed windows is the amount of money they are going to save you in the long run. While putting an exact figure on the amount of money you will save depends on a lot of details concerning your individual home, u-PVC double glazed windows have been shown to effectively reduce the amount of energy consumption in households by anywhere between 50 to 80 per cent.

We hope you have enjoyed this brief overview of the NatHERS/WERS and invite you to contact us if you have any further questions about anything you have read here today. Come back to EuroTech Windows blog page next time when we explore the wonders of u-PVC and exactly what its benefits are for homeowners and builders.
